Ilala

About This Piece

This piece takes its name from the ferry that serves Lake Malawi. It was inspired, in part, by the history of this ferry and its connection to the Scottish missionary explorer, Dr. Livingstone, who's campaign to stop the East African slave trade involved the idea of placing a "small steamer" on Lake Malawi. The piece also deals with the idea of a rite of passage and the struggle for redemption. Influences and other references include Kandinsky, Russian Constructivistm, German expressionism and a photographic record of the Ilala in operation on the Lake, (2006-2009)
