Niamh was born in Dublin, Ireland, and studied Fine Art at Portsmouth Polytechnic, and graduated with an M.A. from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1981. She is currrently a studio-holder at Spike Island in Bristol.
She has work in many collections, both private and public, in the UK and abroad.
Since graduating from the Royal College of Art, Niamh has been a practising professional artist. She has been making abstract paintings, with an emphasis on a strong and distinctive use of colour. She is interested in the process of creating a painting, and how elements of accident and chance influence the outcome.
When making the work, she often uses a basic printing technique, with clothing and textiles. This adds an element of surprise, and creates interesting conflicts by using mass produced recognizable materials to create unique and mysterious images.
Although the paintings are mainly abstract, they usually have a sense of a landscape or seascape space. Niamh has travelled widely, and her work has been inspired by the many places she has visited.
